Welcome!

There's a whole lot more to do in Central New York and Pennsylvania than just soaring. When you come to soar with us at HHSC, please look around at other activities and attractions in our region. There are many natural delights to enjoy and interesting things to do throughout the year. Below is a sampler of what's going on in Harris Hill's neighborhood.

I Love the Finger Lakes! - The "I Love the Finger Lakes!" web site offers a good overview of the recreational, historical, and aesthetic possibilities of the Finger Lakes area. I has up-to-date information on accomodations and dining venues, as well as descriptions and links to area museums and natural resources.

Watkins Glen Race Track - Watkins Glen Race Track needs no introduction, it is one of the world's great Formula race loops. It is well attended every year, as renowned competitors duke it out on every turn and switchback. Please visit their web site and the track itself.

Glenn Curtiss Museum  - (Hammondsport, New York) Like the Wright brothers, Glen Curtiss was a bicycle maker. But instead of being known primarily for his aircraft, he was a master at building aircraft power plants, so vital to the development of early sustained flight. The Glenn Curtiss Museum details the history and displays the wares of this productive inventor.

Corning Glass Center and Museum - (Corning, N.Y.) The Corning Glass Works is world renowned for their contributions to the art and technology of glass making. The Corning Glass Center and Museum displays a staggering array of glass objects, both artistic and practical, dating from early civilization through the latest communications technologies. Live glass blowing demonstrations are scheduled frequently.

Rockwell Museum of Western American Art (Corning, N.Y.) - In downtown Corning a jewel lies quietly waiting. In addition to a fine collection of early practical and art glassware, the Rockwell Museum of Western American Art has a rich collection of art and lore from the frontier days of the American West. From the art and textiles of the Native Americans, to the pistols and rifles of the pioneers, to the drawings, paintings and sculpture of those who documented the westward expansion - it's all there at the Rockwell. An unexpected jewel hidden in the hills of central New York State...

National Soaring Museum - (Elmira, NY) The NSM is located atop Harris Hill adjacent to the Harris Hill Soaring Center. Presented by the National Soaring Museum in Elmira, NY, this website details the extensive exhibits, programs, events, and historical records of the NSM. The museum is open seven days a week and has a great gift shop. [MAP]

Clemens Center for the Performing Arts - Named in honor of Elmira's Samuel Clemens, the Clemens Center hosts a year 'round program of world class performers in their theater in downtown Elmira. Plays, musicals, concerts, comedy - it's all here.

Watkins Glen State Park - (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) Aside from the auto racing for which Watkins Glen is so well know, the park itself provides a cool relief on a hot summer's day. Tumbling waters carved this ancient gorge from the bedrock. There are well-appointed walkways running the length the gorge, crossing and intertwining with the cascades, pools and waterfalls. An hour spent amidst the tumbling waters is a delightfully refreshing and uplifting experience. Closed in winter.

Sciencenter of Ithaca - The Sciencenter is located in the city of Ithaca, in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Central New York State. The museum houses over 100 exhibits and a museum store that make learning about science fun. The Sciencenter is available for group visits, birthday parties, and private functions. Please call for group rates and reservations. (This link suggested by Scot Stricker.)

Finger Lakes Wineries - The Finger Lakes region of New York is home to over a hundred wineries. Many of these have tours and tasting facilities, and because of their close proximity to each other, a number of vineyards can be visited in an afternoon, all while viewing the magnificent Finger Lakes! Browse these links to find the hours of operation at the wineries .... and the vintage of your choice! This page is sponsored by the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, and has excellent maps leading to the vineyards.

Wings of Eagles Discovery Center (formerly the National Warplane Museum) - (Elmira, N.Y.) Did you ever want to see a B-26 or a Spitfire - up close and personal-like? You can, at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center, located at the Elmira (Chemung County) Airport. One of the best warbird aircraft collections in the world, it is renowned for actually flying these remarkable aircraft to display at airshows around the country.

On occasion, the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center has been a centerpiece at the Elmira Air Show. See the Harris Hill Calendar/Activities page for dates.

Watkins Glen Winefest - An event sponsored by the Watkins Glen Race Track, the annual Watkins Glen Winefest is a chance to sample some great vintages produced right here in New York's Finger Lake region. Hundreds of vintages are represented at the tasting tables, and the food is both varied and outstanding. Held on the grounds of the famous race track. Visit their website for dates and details.

Finger Lakes Trail - The main Finger Lakes Trail is 552 miles long and connects the Catskill Mountains with the Allegheny Mountains by passing through remote areas of the Southern Tier of New York State, near Elmira. The main trail connects with the North Country National Scenic Trail in Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania. The Conservation Trail, a major branch trail, connects with the Bruce Trail in Canada. Altogether, the main trail and its branch and loop trails total over 800 miles. Many sections of the Finger Lakes Trail are official segments of the North Country National Scenic Trail. This 3,200-mile-long foot trail is planned to extend across seven states between Lake Champlain in New York and Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota. The linked website offers maps and trail information.

Buttermilk Falls and Taughannock Falls - Picturesque waterfalls and picnic areas near Cayuga Lake and Ithaca, N.Y. (no link)

Newtown National Battlefield - Located 7 miles east of Elmira on Route 17. Historic site with pavilions and picnic areas on the heights above the Chemung Valley. Site of an annual battle re-enactment. (no link)
