Summer and warm weather are generally excellent conditions for soaring. That kind of soaring relies on rising air, heated by the sun. But, another form of soaring - wave soaring - derives its power from the rapid flow of air over mountain barriers. The world record altitude for a sailplane flight was set in wave soaring conditions - over 36,000 feet! Members of HHSC often take road trips to other areas to seek new soaring environments and experiences. In the winter, conditions for wave soaring are often perfect at Mifflin County Airport, amidst the ridges of the Appalachain Mountains of Pennsylvania. These two pages of photos document our trips in search of "the perfect wave".
