Special Announcement

HHSC regrets to announce that illness has compelled Kai Gertsen to withdraw as Competition Director for the 2009 Sports Class Nationals this July at Harris Hill. HHSC and the contest committee would like to wish Kai a speedy recovery and a quick return to the sky.

We are pleased to announce that one of America's best known competitive glider pilots, Heinz Weissenbuehler, Jr. has stepped into this position. Not only is he a highly regarded pilot, he is also a Harris Hill member since his youth, as well as a principal of M and H Soaring.

US Team Mini-Racing Camp!

Running concurrently with the Sports Class Nationals (July 21 through July 30) in Elmira will be a mini-version of the popular US Team Racing Camps. Led by former World and National Champion Doug Jacobs, we’ll meet for an hour each morning before briefing to discuss all aspect of cross country soaring and competition racing – from the basics to advanced tactics.

Developed over several years by the US Team Committee, these presentations have garnered rave reviews from those who’ve attended past US Team Camps. Free and open to all pilots, crew and local enthusiasts.

More details to follow as they are developed on the competition web site. See you there!

SPOT Tracking During Contest

We are working with Frank Paynter and Mark Hawkins to provide a near real-time glider tracking display for all SPOT-equipped gliders (see the article in the June issue of Soaring for a detailed description). If you have a SPOT unit, bring it with you. If you don't have one, consider getting one before you get here. SPOT units are easy to use and can be a literal life-saver, in addition to enhancing spectator and crew involvement.

If you have questions or concerns, contact Frank directly at paynter.5@osu.edu or Mark Hawkins at markhawke7@gmail.com. Frank is also flying in the contest, so he will be on hand at HH to help with any SPOT-related issues.

Real-Time Contest Tracking

Initially try these three links for near real-time traces of competitors progress around the course. Be aware that not all competitors' ships are equipped with the SPOT tracking transmitters. GPS recordings are made and uplinked at 10 minute intervals, but about 10% of the time an individual reading may be lost for various reasons. Therefore, some intervals may be 20 minutes or more.
