BY AUTO:
(These directions are well marked by "Soaring Attraction" signs and take perhaps 10 minutes to perform.)
Drive NY Route 17 (I-86) to Elmira, New York, taking Exit 51A (Chambers Road, Southbound) at the Arnot Shopping Mall.
If traveling westbound on Rt 17 (I-86), turn left at the top of the ramp, passing over Route 17 (I-86) while traveling South. If traveling eastbound on Rt 17 (I-86), follow the ramp to the right which is southbound. You will start to see signs for the National Soaring Museum and Soaring Attractions.
Go 1/4 mile to the traffic light next to Applebee's restaurant. This is County Route 64 (Big Flats Road) and you should turn right, heading westward, between two strip malls, with Applebee's on the right.
Go 1.6 miles to Harris Hill Road, a left turn off of County Route 64 (Big Flats Road). Harris Hill Road runs South up a steep, windy road. Most travel trailers can probably make this road now, as it was recently widened and smoothed. If your rig is heavy, please see special instructions below.
Climb Harris Hill Road for 1.7 miles, turning right at the top of the hill, next to the short golf course on the right. This is still Harris Hill Road and now runs West for .2 mile, where you turn right again at the brown brick County Parks Building, on the right. Another .2 miles places you at the kiddie park.
Continue to follow signs for Soaring Attractions. The National Soaring Museum and Harris Hill Soaring Center are about .3 mile beyond the kiddie park. Take a sharp left turn just as you reach the scenic overlook. Passing the National Soaring Museum, on your left, you will see the red doors of our hanger straight ahead.
If pulling heavy trailers:
Harris Hill Road off of County Route 64 is steep, so those driving travel homes or heavy trailers may wish to continue west on County Route 64 to NY 352, and head east on NY 352. Turn left just before the SPCA/Humane Society and a drive-in theater. This road goes up the backside of the hill to Harris Hill Park and the National Soaring Museum.
NY 352 is an east-west route going through the City of Elmira, following Water Street. One may take Hoffman St (at the red lights) north to where it ends intersecting five roads. Take West Hill Road, continue past Tanglewood Nature Center and Elmira Water Board property, continue on West Hill Road to near the top of the hill, and turn left at the brick Chemung County building. Go past Harris Hill Park, and turn left again just before coming to the overlook, to locate the Harris Hill Soaring site.
